ZING Systems Raises $13 Million in New Round of Funding

ZING Systems Inc. recently announced it has raised $13 million of additional funding, in a round that was led by IDG Ventures Boston. IDG Ventures Boston was joined by Redpoint Ventures, which previously led ZING’s financing rounds. The new round also included funding from Camp Ventures, a Silicon Valley VC.  ZING is working in partnership with leading consumer products companies such as SIRIUS Satellite Radio and SanDisk to create a new class of portable entertainment players.

ZING-based devices are distinguished by their ability to connect, download, manage and exchange entertainment content directly from the player through WiFi or other wireless protocols, without requiring a PC. The first devices based on the ZING Mobile Entertainment Engine include the Stiletto family of wearable satellite radio players from Sirius Satellite Radio, which debuted in Fall 2006, as well as the Sansa Connect from SanDisk, which won a Best of Show award at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show earlier this month.  The new ZING-based players are receiving widespread critical acclaim for finally un-tethering the mobile entertainment experience from the PC.

“The market for mobile entertainment is exploding, and we are really only at the beginning of the curve. There is enormous untapped opportunity when you can connect consumers to their music and entertainment wherever they are, without a PC,” said ZING CEO Tim Bucher.  “We welcome the strategic support of IDG Ventures Boston whose knowledge and passion for the sector are a great fit with ZING.  We are also pleased to have continuing participation by Redpoint Ventures, a leading investor in mobile and consumer technologies that has been with us from the very beginning, as well as Camp Ventures.”

“ZING technology and services are enabling an exciting new class of mobile entertainment devices. And through its partnership with leading brands, we believe ZING is in a unique position to change the playing field for mobile media players,” said Jon Karlen of IDG Ventures Boston, who will also be joining ZING’s Board of Directors.

The ZING Mobile Entertainment Engine is redefining the portable digital audio and entertainment experience. In partnership with leading consumer product and services companies such as SanDisk and SIRIUS Satellite Radio, ZING is powering a new generation of all-in-one mobile digital media devices and experiences that offer consumers new and exciting ways to discover, collect and share music and entertainment. Based in Mountain View, CA, ZING was founded by one of the most experienced teams in mobile digital media products.
