However, there are over 600,000 new businesses starting up annually. This means the competition is stiff, and attracting a venture capitalist could be difficult. Here are five different ways you can make the process easier: Possess the Cure for Pain This revolves around market pain. You should ask yourself where it is, because identifying a market segment is important. It's all about finding one that needs your product or service and isn't getting it at all, or just not getting it the right way. You must have something that allows your customers to feel more comfortable, which will make the company look more attractive to a venture capitalist. Take the time to hang out in these sectors:
- Biotechnology
- Business Products and Services
- Computers and Peripherals
- Consumer Products and Services
- Electronics/Instrumentation
- Financial Services
- Industrial Energy
- IT Services Telecommunications
- Medical Devices and Equipment
- Media and Entertainment
- Networking and Equipment
- Retailing/Distribution
- Semiconductors
- Software
- Telecommunications
There is definitely plenty of room for various sizes and shapes of companies.
However, the closer your sector is to the top the more attractive you will be to the venture capitalist.
Penetrating Large and Growing Markets
Venture capitalists want to see companies that are going to be in large and growing markets. This is especially true if your company can capture and continually penetrate those new customer segments. In the end you will find that everything revolves around high growth and fast exits. Take the time to get in-depth reports from one or more independent marketing research firms.
You want to show the VCs that there are tons of customers waiting for you.
Find a Management Team that is experienced
You definitely want a management team that has been around the block a few times. The same goes for your Board of Directors and any consultants or advisors along the way. Companies with experienced individuals behind them will move quickly towards a lucrative exit, which makes your company look great.
Use a Few Pick-up Lines
If you truly want to “woo” a venture capitalist then you will need a few different approaches. Everything from the high-concept pitch and punchy elevator pitch, to the teaser email and a great business plan will be crucial. Add in a diligent operations plan, an executive summary that is gripping, and the visuals with a solid slide presentation; you will be ready whenever the right venture capitalist is in front of you.
